On June 9, the management committee of Grupa Azoty SA decided to stop its POM (polyacetal) business. This decision is based on the conclusion that the POM business is not economically feasible in the foreseeable future.

The decision to exit the POM business will not have an impact on any other businesses in the company's plastics division, including polyamide 6 and new investment in polypropylene that will start in 2022. Consolidated revenue from external sales of POM products in 2020 is only 14.24 million U.S. dollars, accounting for only 0.5% of Grupa Azoty's total revenue. The company plans to withdraw from the polyoxymethylene business by August 31, 2021 at the latest.

In related developments, Celanese Corp. announced that it has obtained certain technologies related to the production of POM products from Grupa Azoty. The transaction is expected to be completed in early July 2021. Grupa Azoty lists 64 grades of POM, including fiber-reinforced grades, and has also developed low-VOC copolymer grades as low as 5 ppm.

Celanese will take over all existing Tarnoform contracts to provide services to Azoty's customers. However, with the exception of certain equipment transfers related to the transfer of intellectual property rights, this transaction does not include any Azoty employees, tangible assets, manufacturing facilities or sales offices.

"This transaction will enable Celanese to provide Celanese assets to Azoty's customers, thereby providing Celanese with an opportunity to increase volume and gain access to a POM customer base and proven POM technology in Tarnoform," Senior Deputy Engineering President Tom Kelly said. Material, Celanese. "Our engineered materials business is Celanese's key growth engine, and we will continue to take the necessary strategic steps, such as customer and product acquisitions, to drive the continued success of the business," Kelly concluded.

Grupa Azoty is a major fertilizer supplier, and this business accounts for 48% of revenue. Chemicals (urea, titanium dioxide, oxo alcohol, melamine and plasticizers) accounted for 31% of revenue, and plastics accounted for 16% (currently polyamide 6, caprolactam, polyacetal).

Grupa Azoty increased its polyamide (PA) 6 production capacity to 170,000 tons per year in 2017. The company is also developing 3D printing grade PA 6 resin. The company stated that it will start producing PP at a 400,000-ton/year facility in 2022.
